TORRI DEL BALIO
These Medieval towers were the outposts of military fortresses, and the seat of the governor (“bajulo”). The two towers were linked together by mighty boundry walls. Around the middle of the nineteenth century Earl Agostini Pepoli, asked to have the pentagonal shaped tower that was demolished in the seventeenth century rebuilt on the central tower. The reason for this was that from the tower’s summit, in case of insurrections, the citadel could be protected. In 1872 Earl Pepoli had the surrounding gardens landscaped in the English style at his own cost, and he was also responsible for the construction of the underlying “Pepoli Tower”, ceremonial building of Moorish inspiration.
