TONNARA DEL SECCO
La “tonnara a terra” – tuna fish warehouse on land which is now in disuse was a structure used to aid the tuna fishing nets and boats in the sea with storerooms for the nets, docking for the boats, apartment buildings for the accommodation of the crews, and a factory for the working of the tuna fish. A few metres from the building are the remains of ancient cetariae tubs, dating back to the IV century B.C., in which fish, including tuna was worked to make the delicacy garum (fish sauce pesce), which was much appreciated by the Romans.
